As Organizations Grapple with Managing Highly Distributed and Diverse Data Infrastructures, Harper Introduces a Single Platform for Building, Scaling, and Running High-Performant Data-Dependent Applications and Websites

DENVER, Colorado – March 4, 2025 –  Launched in 2017 as a Distributed Systems Platform, today HarperDB is excited to announce its rebranding under the name Harper, removing the database notation from its corporate name and identity. This simplified name, new brand identity, and redesigned website reflects the company’s evolution from a database vendor focused on performance, to a full stack application delivery platform that enables data architects and development teams to transform the economics of their organization through the accelerated speed and scale of data-intense workloads.

After years of continued product innovation and customer feedback, Harper has fused the traditional software stack – typically connecting three or more networked systems – into one, high-performant, low-latency technology platform capable of securing, managing and extracting value from data at the edge. This disruptive backend technology combines database, application, cache, and messaging functions into a single process, on a single server. Layers of resource-consuming logic, serialization, and network processes between each technology in the stack are removed, resulting in extremely low response times that translate into greater customer engagement, user satisfaction, and revenue growth for Harper users.

“From the outset, Harper has been focused on delivering incredible performance for web-based applications,” said Stephen Goldberg, CEO and Co-Founder of Harper. “We started with a database because we knew that we had to get that foundation right. The rebrand ultimately reflects our long-term vision of delivering the most performant, future-forward application platform in the world, allowing digital commerce brands to deliver lightning-fast experiences to their customers that drive revenue, while reducing IT costs and complexity.”

Harper has removed the traditional barriers that impede web performance making the journey to checkout as quick and seamless as possible. Common backend processes that take an upward of 100 milliseconds on traditional systems take only 0.2-1 millisecond with Harper. Users experience web page loads nearly 10 times faster than industry averages, with some Harper users seeing Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) load times 30 times faster than industry benchmarks.

For the first time in history, 2023 saw consumer spending on online shopping overtake in-store shopping 63 percent to 37 percent. Consumer preferences for speed and decision to purchase are well documented. According to Truelist, nearly 80 percent of consumers who are dissatisfied with load speeds are less likely to return; 70 percent say speed affects their likelihood to buy; and 75 percent of all sales are lost due to abandonment. When sub-seconds mean business, deploying Harper can bring a multimillion-dollar return on investment.

For its support of high-speed digital infrastructure and solving the latency and complexity challenges of gathering, processing, storing and moving data across many distributed locations, Harper was named a 2024 IDC Innovator.

About Harper

Harper enables companies to achieve web speed, scale, and performance levels never seen before – with customers reporting as much as 7x faster page loads, nearly 30x faster LCPs, and more than 25 percent year-over-year revenue growth. Its innovative, backend technology collapses the traditional software stack into one highly-efficient, low-latency system with limitless horizontal scale. By combining data, application, cache, and messaging functions into a single process, on a single server, Harper eliminates the constraints and complexity of building, distributing, and maintaining data-dependent applications. In doing so, Harper unlocks new revenue streams for its clients and inspires dev teams to innovate without compromise. To learn more, visit www.harpersystems.dev

5 Architectures for Web Personalization

Personalization is a data-delivery problem. Every architectural choice reduces to two distances: compute to user, and compute to fresh data. This piece maps five real architectures against both axes, scored on a concrete retailer workload where stale or slow data breaks the business.

Agentic Engineering Needs an Opinion: Why Scale Starts with Architecture

AI coding works in a sandbox because the environment is trivially narrow. Real systems have history, constraints, and blast radius. Coding agents make sound decisions only when the architecture is explicit and shared. Opinion isn't a constraint on agentic engineering, it's what makes it possible at scale.

Building a Cozy Sandbox Game on Harper

A nature-restoration game with six biomes, 150 animals, and a real food web — built with a single Harper component as the entire backend. One YAML file wires the database, API, content seeder, and static host. The same binary ships offline on itch.io.

Your Website was Built for Humans. AI Needs Something Cleaner.

The web spent a decade optimizing for browsers. JavaScript-heavy rendering, dynamic CMS templates, and client-side hydration made pages beautiful and machines blind. AI answer engines retrieve, parse, and cite content directly. If your best content is trapped behind a render cycle, a cleaner source wins.
